REGION

The sublimated Douro

The region's singularities were highlighted and recognized in 2001 with the classification of the Alto Douro Wine Region as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With around 20%, S. João da Pesqueira is the municipality with the largest classified area.

This settlement dates back to ancient times, as evidenced by the immense archaeological remains spread throughout the municipality. The existence of emblazoned palaces and centuries-old churches rich in history and culture also bear witness to the different eras that S. João da Pesqueira has experienced.

S. João da Pesqueira is proud to hold the oldest Charter in living memory, prior to the creation of Portuguese nationality, which was crucial to ensuring the conditions for the settlement and prosperity of the population, as well as in increasing its cultivated area, by granting greater freedoms and privileges to its inhabitants.

The region's landscapes, in an endless succession of slopes torn into terraces that men have designed, surprise with their grandeur and invite you on a journey through history where wine culture is deeply rooted.
